Established in 1980, Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan is an onsen ryokan located in Honmachi, Takayama. The ryokan provides 24 guest rooms near the Seiryu Miyagawa River, where they can listen to its running flow and think of tranquility. Its rooms feature traditional Japanese design, which cost between 15,000 to 55,000 JPY per night, including an attached bathroom with hot-washing a toilet.
Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan is near to tourist attractions like Takayama Showa Museum, Sanmachi Suji, and Takayama Jinya, which guests can visit during their stay at the inn. The ryokan can be reached by rides coming from Nagoya. Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan welcomes guests even amid the pandemic, provided those who stay will bring documents and have their temperatures checked.
Emphasis on the “experience“. We’ve been traveling around Japan for a week staying in western style hotels going from sight to sight. We spent two nights here and loved every minute. The staff could not possibly do more for you. Even down to drying your shoes when you come in from the rain. We had a lovely huge suite with a western bed in one room and futons if we wanted them in the other room. They have a lovely onsen on site and more in two properties across the street. They were happy to drop us off wherever we needed to in their limousine. We were expertly introduced to many Japanese customs and enjoyed walking the streets in our yukatas. Our room rate included breakfast and dinner and the food was fantastic. The first night we had courses including grilled yellowtail, sashimi and hida beef. The second night we were taken out to a restaurant serving hida and tuna. We did go out to stroll the streets, have lunch in a sake brewery and take a bus to Shirakawa-go and back. But we had a lot of rain and we truly enjoyed this Ryokan. Do it!
A safe choice
Excellent location. We had the full ryokan experience - dinner in our room was excellent. The ladies onsen just next door was charming and really well-equipped. The hotel itself is a 70's building so perhaps lacks the charm of more traditional accommodation but our tatami room and balcony over the river compensated for this. Very professionally run. Free transfer to and from the station was easy to organise.
Ryokan or « ryokan » ?
Ok, there are different types of the traditional japanese inn, but if you are looking for the iconic one, made of blackened wood, looking like a house from the Edo period, this one is definitely not the place to come to.
But if you aim to try out the tatami/futon/onsen/japanese breakfast like in the old days, with the extra comforts of having your private bathroom and in a hotel environment, this is an ok place.
The evening dinner was fantastic, the service in the rooms good, the front desk not too bad...
We stayed for three nights and I wasn’t very happy to have to take half pension when I booked ( they didn’t give me the choice!)
But it turned out very good as the food in the “sister” restaurants was also to notch!
( Hida beef one night, sushi the other ).
All in all a good stay although the premices are a bit shabby and run down and should really be redecorated, as they have absolutely no charm . Expensive for what it is. And by far not a building for architecture lovers I’m afraid...
But, last but not least, the location: it is on the river, at the epicentre of Takayama, and this is really nice.
Try to avoid room 508 as it always smelled of
cooking, no matter how hard we tried to air it ( it must sit over the kitchen vents ...!)
Perfect Ryokan Experience with Superb Hida Beef Kaiseki Dinner
Stayed 2 nights and totally worthwhile. Great location to visit Shirakawago and spend some time at this quaint Takayama township.
1. Spacious layout of Ryokan
2. Onsen has 2 choices - upstairs at Highest floor and at the public bath at ground level next to hotel (opened till midnight)
3. Kaiseki meal is served in the room for the first night and second night is at a posh restaurant that serves 3-course dinner (2-way transport provided); both meals offered Hida-Beef!
4. Free shuttle service to JR Train station (pick up and drop off) plus day trip shuttle to bus station bound for Shirakawago
5. Takayama old town and key sights are surrounding the hotel
6. Lots of eateries / cafes / restaurants and short walk to both morning markets (opposite hotel and by the riverside)
Great location, nice service, small hotel, comfortable
We stayed in the Japanese Style Superior River room. The room was very comfortable, just not something that is highly modern or amazing, it is just comfortable. it was very clean, just a bit dated. The service was excellent. The room for two nights included breakfast both days and dinner both days - first night Kaiseki in room which was nice and service was great. It was a nice experience, though the actual quality of food wasn't as good as some other Ryokans. The dinner the second night one can choose from steak place or seafood place or sushi place or something else that I cannot recall. We chose sushi and we thought as it was included we would not get quality food but it was quite good, with a lot of food and just across the road and nice quality. The breakfast was large and quite good. They are very strict with setting times. The bathroom is the usual wet rooms that are fairly small and not luxurious but that is fairly standard across Japan. The location of the hotel was perfect right next to everything and parking was included. The wifi worked well. It was very difficult to find modern nice accommodation in Takayama that was affordable but this was a nice enough experience.
