Cheap hostel with a nice garden
My expectations were high given the (mainly) high ratings given by other reviewers. However, I was sorely disappointed. The room was run down with old and mismatched furniture. My room had a private bathroom with a tub that had a piece of wood wedged on one corner to prevent it from rocking (although it still did). The sliding doors didn’t slide but wobbled. In the morning, there were piles of used sheets in the corridor and cleaning items left on the chair outside the room - giving a real messy feel to the whole place. As I had a road facing room, traffic noise could be heard throughout the night (although Kyoto is a quiet town and this is in a fairly quiet part of town, the ryokan is along a mid size road with moderate amount of traffic going by). The staff were nice but nothing else about the place really justifies the high price charged for the room. Honestly, I’ve stayed in hostels that provided a much higher level of personalised service and guest experience compared to this.

Authentic ryokan experience in a perfect location
Beautiful room, lovely staff, exquisite gardens and perfect location make the Kyoto Nanzenji Garden Ryokan Yachiyo a fabulous choice for your visit to Kyoto! We enjoyed the wonderful hospitality, the comfortable futons and delicious comforters, and a divine dinner at the restaurant! And, while my Japanese is very limited, the staff all spoke English and were very patient with my modest attempts to speak Japanese. Also, the Nanzen-ji Temple just down the road is amazingly beautiful.

A few days in Kyoto
This beautiful Ryokan was our best choice on our trip in Japan. It’s located a few steps from Nanzenji Temple. And around 10 minutes walk to a subway station. But it’s nice to take a bike and go for a bike tour around the city, and it’s offered for free. We had a room with garden view and loved it. Every is incredible friendly and has a family feeling. The Japanese Breakfast was fantastic and we still miss that. For sure one fine day we wanna go back there.

Great stay
Staying in a Ryokan in Japan is a must. The Yachiyo Ryoken is a lovely, quiet family runned oasis. Yes, it might give some people the impression of being old fashioned BUT this is exactly what you want - getting the charm and spirit of how the old days and feeling like a Gaisha or Samurai. If you don't, you are better off in a chain hotel. We also had the traditional dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast where I discovered new foods - amazing! They really look after you and introduce you into Japanese traditions and culture and will help you if you don't know how to wear a Kimono or the way to eat your food. Everything is absolutely clean and perfectly arranged. Last but not least, it was heartwarming when the owner sang a Japanese song about Switzerland (I'm Swiss) I wished I would know the name of this song to be able to look it up. We would definitely come back 🙂

Best Ryokan Experience
I saw another couple review this Ryokan on YouTube and just had to see it for myself. It met every expectation you have when you think of old Japan and it’s food and culture. I highly recommend it to anyone who has never tried Kyokaiseki.
