Keishokan Sazanamitei

Opened in 1928, Keishokan Sazanamitei is a traditional Japanese inn located in Tomonoura. It is known for being the inspiration behind Ponyo, which is one of the most popular animated films in Japan by Studio Ghibli.

The hotel has a total number of 26 rooms, which cost between 30,000 to 50,000 JPY per night, with some of the rooms having an open-air hot spring bath. Some of the rooms also offer a view of the sea while others show off the calm of the garden.

The hotel offers large public baths that can be enjoyed by men and women separately while appreciating the ocean view.Guests are invited to taste authentic Japanese cuisine, whose ingredients are sourced from the nearby ocean.

Guests are welcome at Keishokan Sazanamitei, provided that they take precautionary measures and follow policies implemented due to the coronavirus. The location is near to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Itsukushima Shrine, which are World Heritage Sites officially listed by UNESCO. A shuttle bus can be taken from Hiroshima Station.

Book Keishokan Sazanamitei in Tomonoura Onsen (Hiroshima) -  This purely Japanese-style onsen ryokan is located at Tomonoura, which is a port town known as the inspiration for Ponyo, a famous animated film by Studio Ghibli. All the 26 guest rooms, some in the "Honkan" (main building) and some in the "Bekkan" (annex), are washitsu (traditional Japanese-style rooms).
Seven rooms come with open-air hot spring baths, four of which face the sea and three face the garden. In the gender-segregated large public onsen baths, there is a boat-shaped open-air bath and a large cypress barrel bath, and both of them command a spectacular view of the expansive ocean.

Two rental baths outside the rooms for private use are also available. Guests here can enjoy spa hopping at a nearby onsen accommodation of the same group called Hotel Ofutei.

It is just a five-minute walk from Keishokan Sazanamitei. As to dining, you can eat authentic Japanese meals making use of seafood from the nearby waters, such as red seabream which is a specialty of Tomonoura, at a cabin restaurant.
