Shima Tamura

Shima Tamura is a historical Japanese inn located in Shima Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. The ryokan has a history that spans almost 500 years from its establishment in 1563, and maintains a 330,000 square meter forest on its property. The inn features ancient Japanese architectural designs that have been preserved with modern renovations.

There are 47 rooms, some with a private cypress hot spring bath. The rooms are predominantly Japanese style, with some units sporting a Japanese-Western interior.
All the rooms have tatami mats and a sitting area with wide windows looking out into the mountainside. One night’s stay can range from 20,000 to 45,000 JPY.

Guests are served a Japanese breakfast in the dining room and a kaiseki dinner that will feature seasonal ingredients from the area.

Guests have seven hot spring bath options to choose from--private reservable baths, gender-segregated hot spring baths, communal hot spring baths, both indoor and open-air, some even nestled by a waterfall.
Shima Tamura is accessible by taking the JR Limited Express from Ueno Station, Tokyo. The establishment is operating normally with safety measures in place and limited acceptance to prevent the spread of infection.

A ryokan particularly good for health and beauty

The name "Shima hot spring" comes from the saying, "works for forty thousand illnesses." The hot spring is filled with spring water bubbling up naturally. The water is good for gastrointestinal illnesses, the joints, muscle pain, skin beautification, etc.

"No. 1" ryokan in Japan

This ryokan has five hundred years of history and maintains an expansive 330,000 square meter forest. This is what makes the water from the ryokan pipes so rich in minerals and taste so good.
