Tofuku-ji Temple

This is a walking tour that usually departs from the Kyoto Samurai & Ninja Museum at 10:00 in downtown Kyoto. The fee covers 10 people. The tour is about 2 hours. Your tour guide is a government licenced tour guide. Whether you are a couple or a a group of 10 people the price is standard. The tour guide escorts you all the time and you take public transportation or ride a taxi as a group.

If you go to Fushimi Inari Shrine, make sure to visit quiet Tofukuji, one of the major Zen temples in Kyoto. It is only 15 minutes’ walk from Fushimi Inari Shrine and one stop both by JR and Keihan Line.

Originally built in the 13th century. Tofukukuji is particularly famous for autumn leaves, but not many tourists are around in other seasons. Nevertheless, the oldest remaining zen temple gate in Japan is spectacular to look at and the toilet for 100 training monks are interesting to wonder.

Make also sure to visit the Abbot’s living quarter, which has the zen garden by Mirei Shigemori, one of the greatest landscape master of landscape stone gardens. This garden was his first work in 1939 and it became one of the most important zen gardens. Mirei studied and measured 400 classical gardens around the country. The temple did not have money, so he had to recycle everything. Also, he was doing it for free, so he had much freedom creating what he wanted without hesitation.

If you enjoy this garden, make sure to visit Komyoin, one of the sub-temples of Tofukuji, which also has a beautiful zen garden by Mirei.
