An Authentic Maiko Tea Ceremony in Kyoto

Tea ceremony is part of the artistic training of Kyoto's geisha and maiko. During the experience, your host introduces the movements, utensils and spirit behind the Way of Tea.

You will discover how matcha is prepared and presented to express mindfulness, harmony and respect. The relaxed format makes this Kyoto tea ceremony welcoming even if it is your first time.

A maiko usually hosts the session. On some dates, a geisha may appear depending on availability.

Kyoto Geisha Dance Performance

Watch a geisha or maiko perform a traditional Japanese dance in an intimate tatami room near Kyoto's Gion district.

An English-speaking interpreter explains the clothing, movements and symbolism, helping you appreciate the artistry behind the performance.

After the dance, you will have time to ask questions and take commemorative photos with your host.

  • Kimono wearing is not included. If desired, book the Kimono Rental Add-On for a time at least one hour before this experience.
  • Children under 7 cannot enter the tea ceremony venue.
  • Please contact us in advance regarding participation by guests with special needs.
  • In the rare event that an emergency involving the geisha requires cancellation, you will be notified by email and receive a full refund.

Kimono rental during peak periods: Please contact us by email for bookings from March 16-April 30, October 1-31, and December 20-January 5. Availability is limited, so early contact is recommended.

A geisha, called a geiko in Kyoto, is a professional artist trained in traditional dance, music and hospitality. A maiko is an apprentice who is still completing her artistic training.

Can I take photos with the geisha or maiko?

Yes. There will be an opportunity to take commemorative photos after the ceremony and performance. Please follow the host's guidance and remain respectful.

Can children join the geisha tea ceremony?

Children aged 7 and older may participate. Children under 7 cannot enter the tea ceremony venue.

Can I film the entire experience?

Please do not film the full ceremony or dance performance. Short personal videos may be possible at the designated photo time; please ask for permission first.

Do I need to sit on the floor?

No. Chairs and tables can be provided upon request for guests who are more comfortable with western-style seating.

How long is the geisha tea ceremony and show?

The experience lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes. Kyoto geisha tea ceremonies must be reserved in advance; walk-in participation is not available.

Are the Japanese sweets suitable for dietary restrictions?

Traditional wagashi are generally plant-based and suitable for vegan and vegetarian guests. They are also generally compatible with halal and kosher diets, though strict certification is not guaranteed.
