    Dress & discover

    Begin at MAIKOYA Nishiki. Choose your kimono and enjoy a guided group tea ceremony, your own bowl of matcha, and seasonal Japanese sweets.

  2. 02 BETWEEN EXPERIENCES

    A pause in Kyoto

    Enjoy time between the two experiences. Allow time to return your kimono and travel to Kyoto Kanze Noh Theatre, a separate venue. Transportation from MAIKOYA to the theatre is not included; please arrange and pay for your own journey.

  3. 03 16:30 RECEPTION / 17:30 START

    Legends & laughter

    Discover noh and kyogen through English introductions, compact performances, a post-show Q&A, and a designated photo opportunity. The event ends at 19:00. At the theatre entrance, give the reception staff your booking name and reservation number.

Plan your kimono return: the standard rental return time is 18:00, while IMAGINE NOH ends at 19:00. Please arrange your return before travelling to the theatre, unless MAIKOYA confirms a different arrangement for your booking.

A hands-on introduction to the way of tea

Step into MAIKOYA Nishiki, a traditional Kyoto machiya near Nishiki Market. Your English-speaking host introduces the utensils, etiquette, and gestures of Japanese tea culture before you prepare your own matcha.

  • Kimono selection and assistance with dressing.
  • English-guided group tea ceremony.
  • Matcha preparation and seasonal wagashi sweets.
  • Approximately 90 minutes, including kimono dressing.

The tea ceremony usually begins about 30 minutes after arrival, once the group is dressed. The selected time is your arrival time at MAIKOYA.

Kaki Yamabushi — mischief in the orchard

A mountain monk’s misbehaviour in a persimmon orchard leads to comic trouble. Kyogen brings an earthy, playful counterpoint to the world of noh.

  • Ages 7 and above: this combined plan is available to guests aged 7 or older. Children under 7 cannot participate in the MAIKOYA tea ceremony.
  • Language: the tea ceremony is guided in English; IMAGINE NOH includes English introductions and interpreted post-show Q&A. The plays themselves are traditional performances.
  • Group experience: each tea ceremony start time accommodates up to 12 participants.
  • Seating: you do not need to remain in seiza during the tea ceremony. Please request seating assistance in advance; chairs are subject to availability.
  • Allergies: please advise MAIKOYA in advance. The standard sweets contain no nuts as an ingredient but are produced in a facility handling nuts, so cross-contact is possible. Yatsuhashi is not served to guests with severe nut allergies.
  • Language support: interpreting by guests or third-party interpreters during the tea ceremony is not permitted. Please contact MAIKOYA in advance about written guides or assistance.

Is this suitable for beginners?

Yes. The tea ceremony introduces each step, and the theatre program offers English explanations to help first-time audiences enjoy noh and kyogen.

Can I attend the show in my rental kimono?

Please arrange your kimono return before travelling to the theatre unless MAIKOYA confirms a different return arrangement. The standard 18:00 return time is earlier than the 19:00 end of the show.

Are both experiences at MAIKOYA?

No. The tea ceremony is at MAIKOYA Nishiki, and the performance is at Kyoto Kanze Noh Theatre. Transportation between MAIKOYA and the theatre is not included. Please make your own travel arrangements, cover your own transport costs, and allow enough time to arrive before the performance.

What if my plans change?

The tea ceremony and noh ticket have different cancellation deadlines. Please see the cancellation policy below and contact nishiki@maikoya.com with your booking name and reservation number.

Cancellation policy

Tea ceremony portion

Cancel at least 24 hours before your scheduled tea ceremony start time for a refund of the tea ceremony portion. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the start time are non-refundable for this portion.

IMAGINE NOH ticket portion

The noh ticket portion is non-refundable from 7 days before the performance onwards. Cancelling the tea ceremony does not override the noh ticket’s cancellation policy.

Each deadline applies separately to its respective part of the package. All deadlines use Japan Standard Time. To request a cancellation, contact nishiki@maikoya.com with your booking name and reservation number.
