Embark on a unique journey to forge your very own Japanese katana (kogatana small blade), guided by one of Japan's most renowned artisans—an expert featured on national and international television. Learn the secrets of traditional blade-forging as you work with the same materials and techniques used to create full-sized katanas.

Located just an hour outside Kyoto, the forge sets the stage for this captivating experience. You’ll meet your friendly and skilled swordsmith, who will guide you through a four-hour immersive session into the art of blacksmithing.

During this hands-on experience, you’ll go through the key steps of katana-making:

  • Hidukuri (火造り): Heat the iron charcoal and shape it into the preliminary knife form.
  • Yakinamashi (焼きなまし): Heat the iron to 700 degrees, then carefully cool it in straw charcoal to prepare it for forging.
  • Tuchitori (土取り): Use soil to mark areas of the iron for heating during the quenching process.
  • Meigiri (銘切り): Carve a name onto the blade with a chisel.
  • Yakiire (焼入れ): Harden the blade edge by heating it to 750 degrees, followed by quenching in water.

After completing the katana-making process, you’ll proudly take home your handcrafted small blade—a lasting reminder of your craftsmanship and an unforgettable keepsake.

Since you will be creating a small blade, it’s easy to take with you on a plane. If needed, the swordsmith can ship it to your home for a small fee.
