International scholars should note that almost every major Japanese university has the “foreign researcher” (外国人研究者) system where every year a number of foreign scholars are invited to do research in Japan. The procedure tends to be rather simple.
First, a Japanese professor in the corresponding university nominates a foreign scholar, fills out a form and then submits it to his/her research centre in the university. Once approved by the university, the nominated scholar can soon arrive in Japan, gets his/her own desk and stays in Japan from 1 month to 12 months, depending on the budget.
