Traditional Ryokan experience
Stayed two nights in this traditional ryokan, we booked the room with private semi outdoor onsen (Mokuren room). Location is convenient and easy to find, only 3 mins by taxi from JR Saga Arashiyama station, we arranged pickup and confirmed by email but they didn't show up so we just take the taxi. The place is beautiful and unique, very good service. Very convenient: It's just right next to the famous Togetsukyo, around the corner (1 min walk) to the entrance of Monkey park and sightseeing boat cruise entrance, across the bridge heaps of small local shops and eatery, Tenryu temple also around 5 mins of walk. During our three days stay we can go back to the ryokan anytime and enjoy afternoon onsen and then go to sightseeing again, very handy. Dinner - 1st night Kaiseki style served in room, many dishes and very tasty, it's very special experience and we love it. 2nd night they served us Shabu shabu (japanese hotpot), it's still good but it's more simple than the 1st night, personally would prefer Kaiseki (traditional japanese) Breakfast will be serve in the restaurant on the selected time we choose, anytime from 7am-9am, breakfast is traditional Japanese breakfast with alot of side dishes served in the bento box, rice, soup, we can choose either bacon, salmon or fish, and they also served with famous Tofu in hotpot. Free fill of juice, tea and coffee, egg, fruit. It is very delicious and content to start the day. They usually put all Non japanese guests right in the middle of the restaurant and japanese guest on the quiet and more privacy side. The room is very comfortable, private onsen is perfect, can use anytime. We also rent the outdoor private onsen for 40 mins which is around 1500 yen, well if you have the private onsen in the room, you don't need to spend extra $, the outdoor onsen is abit bigger and maybe because it's around 9pm, we cannot see much view outside and it's very cold in / out the onsen. There is free yuzu juice and water in the resting area next to the in house onsen, but it will run out and no refill. Reminder: If you want to drink milk or make your own tea / coffee, there is no milk provided and around 10 mins walk to the nearest convenient store (closed at night). Free drop off after check out which is very convenient. It's expensive, we did enjoy the stay and definitely once in the lifetime experience.

Excellent experience with considerable price
There are many things you can experience in Japanese "Ryokan" for sure. but what they provide vary greatly with price. This Ryokan has real "Onsen(hot spring)" with views, traditional in-room dining, traditional bed preparation, and many local food. When thiking of the price, which is still quite high, you can experice lot of things in one place and taste many good food on one dinner table. Staffs are so great, kind and always trying thier best. But sitting on the Tatami, japanese floor, and sleeping in the Japanese bed could be very inconvinient to someone.

Could be better
My wife and I booked here for our last night in Japan, with the hope that it would be the "capstone" experience of our 10-day adventure. I was a little disappointed. Some of it was just cultural differences, I think, but some of it was just sub-par hospitality. Pros: - the formal dinner was very good, and well-presented - there was a thick instruction manual in the room that set some expectations for Westerners (like us) who had no idea what to expect from the ryokan experience - the yukatas provided by the hotel were a nice, cozy, fun touch - the futons were very comfortable and we slept great - we got a room with a private hot bath, and enjoyed that - the booking agency we used did not relay our "no meat" requests for our meals, so we had to communicate that rather last minute, and they did a GREAT job of accommodating - the location is fantastic, very convenient to the main attractions of the Arashiyama area Cons: - we weren't really made to feel welcome on arrival, but rather were inundated with a bunch of rules and requests - some staff handled the language difference great, making sure they understood our needs/requests before trying to execute, others were not so great about this - frequent to constant smells of cigarette smoke, either from adjacent rooms or from the lobby, where it is permitted. - the ryokan room is not that comfortable to just hang out in, and the smokers in the lobby ruled that option out as well. I agree with the other reviewer who said that staying here for more than one night might be pushing it for most Westerners.

Fantastic experience
We spent two nights there, should be an experience that every visitor to Japan does.Brilliant service in a very authentic ryokan. Beautiful food and well worth the effort. The location is also ideal as its away form the centre of Kyoto but close enough by train.

Great location
We have been to many onsen ryokans in Japan and this is considered the worst we have ever been. The room and onsen area are not clean and have bad odor. The kaiseki is fancy but the ingredients are not fresh. The server told us the special of the dinner was toro. Both my daughter and I could not swallow the fishy toro, even though toro has always been our favorite sashimi. However, the location is great and has nice view of the bridge and river.
