Hiiragiya

Established in 1818, Hiiragiya is a traditional Japanese inn located in Nakagyo. Hiiragiya is a renowned inn that is considered to be the oldest ryokan and belonging to the category as one of the most precious traditional accommodations in Japan.

It has been a favorite and host of local and international figures, notably the imperial family, novelists, authors, writers, scientists, and other recognized icons. Two of these renowned international figures were actors Charlie Chaplin and Elizabeth Taylor.

The exterior of the ryokan is often described as going back in its past. The rooms of the ryokan are based on traditional Japanese design and are known to be preserved architecture dating back to the Edo and Showa period.
Though other rooms have been splashed with modern elements, each style and concept of the inn still echoes the ancient atmosphere, which the rooms also resound. Hiiragiya has a total of 28 rooms, which cost around 60,000 to 100,000 JPY per night.
The ryokan is also commended for its Okami which is known to take good care of its guests as a mother would. The inn also features the famed kaiseki meal with its dishes depending on the change of seasons.
After meals, guests can walk around the ryokan and see mini gardens. For a larger garden view, guests can easily see it from their rooms. Hiiragiya also has baths made of wood for a relaxing soak.
The location is near to tourist attractions like the Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace Park.
The ryokan can be reached by car or bus coming from JR Kyoto Station. Due to the coronavirus, children in primary school age and under are not permitted in the ryokan.
