Love this hotel, room and onsen are both excellent
This is a large-scale hotel, service is not as good as the other hotel that I have stayed in Kusatsu. But I really love the size of its room and the amenities provided in the onsen. Although I booked the room with 10 tatami only, its really so spacious with 2 extra side rooms. Its also provides 2 toilet, so even a bigger family can find it very convenient.

Convenient but spa is not the best
Talk out of railway station turn right up hill , just 7 minutes walk. A grand reception hall and big Japanese style room. The buffet style dinner and breakfast iate served at the grand ball room with plenty of food Choice with all you can drink soft drink. Just add 1950 yen you can have alcohol drink too. One disappointed is the spa, there is only one indoor and one outdoor hot spring. But the hot spring is large enough to accommodate large number of people. There is no sauna or steam spa in the hot spring.

Good hotel
Great location, nice Western sized rooms and good buffet selection for dinner and breakfast. Walking distance from center of activities. Good service and may feel commercial, suited for large conventions but I’m happy with it since staff is efficient and well trained to interact with foreign guests. Baths are located in the hotel. Very well stocked with good amenities and it’s nicely heated. There are both outdoor and indoor baths. Outdoor baths are smaller but sufficient size. Indoor ones are large. There’s also a more private bath that has maximum capacity of 20 pax but it feels more confined. I would return.

Below the standard of a Japanese Ryokan
I was there a few month ago and I forgot to write the review. Honestly I got disappointed about the service specially in the room. The staff are not so friendly as what I expected for a traditional Japanese Ryokan (omotenashi ‘s level was very low). After the check in, me and my friend were to enjoyed the hot springs and when we came back to the room , the staff have arranged the futon (Japanese traditional bedding) but they moved my bag and the way that I found it was like they just thrown it out without any delicacy. Honestly, that was the first time in Japan with this kind of strange experience; as Ryokan are famous for the omotenashi. The room was a bit old, and I think they need to improve the cleanliness. I felt an odor in the room not very pleasant. The buffet also was not a big deal. Sincerely, I don’t think that I will consider this hotel again in a future trip to Kusatsu.

Real fresh kusatsu onsen
Sakurai is one of the biggest hotel in kusatsu onsen. However their public bath uses 100%fresh onsen water from two different types of hot springs. One is a clear water, the other ones are white water. They're both great. I visit this ryokan annually with my family. My kid has severe food allergies (dairy, wheat, egg, nuts, sesame) but they always make special meal for my kid. Staff are very kind. You can choose table service dinner or buffet. I've been both, and they were both great. They make buffet dish fresh, not frozen meal. Some are with chef's station (sushi, steak grill, tempura etc). From 730pm they have a Japanese Taiko drum show and dance. From 8, yumomi experience show. If you join the performance, you get ¥500 ($6) voucher for a souvenir shop. Very relaxing ryokan. Most rooms are renovated and nice. Easy walk to yubatake but they offer free shuttle from the hotel too. Very recommended!!
