Unleash Your Inner Samurai

You'll all get a chance to try your hand at sword training and feel like samurais-in-training for the day. The experience is designed to be both engaging and educational, with a special focus on making sure everyone — no matter their age — can enjoy and participate.

It's a great way for kids to learn about Japanese culture while having fun with the whole family.

Step 1: Change into Hakama and Step into a Samurai's Shoes

Your experience begins the moment you change into authentic samurai attire — the hakama (traditional samurai pants) and a kimono-style top. Once you're suited up in your samurai gear, you're ready to enter the dojo.

Be sure to capture this moment with photos — you'll want to remember what it felt like to be a samurai for the day!

NEW — 2026

Face the Samurai. Strike with Everything You Have.

First, your Samurai Master drills you in the fundamentals: grip, stance, distance, drawing the sword, and the traditional kata — a sequence of precise, flowing sword movements passed down through generations. Move by move, your form sharpens.

Then comes the moment of truth. Until now, sword lessons meant swinging at the air. Not anymore. Standing before you in the dojo is a life-size, samurai-shaped striking dummy — armored shoulders squared, waiting for your blade. You step forward, raise your sword, and deliver a real, full-power strike — men to the head, dō to the torso, kesa-giri across the shoulder — and feel the impact travel through your hands the way warriors did centuries ago. The satisfying thunk of a clean hit is addictive; kids and adults alike line up to go again.

Because you strike a fixed target instead of a partner, everyone from age 3 up can swing safely — and swing hard.

FAQs About Family Friendly Samurai Sword Experience in Asakusa, Tokyo

How long is the experience and what ages can join?

The experience lasts approximately 120 minutes and is open to participants aged 3 and above. Children aged 12 and under receive the child rate. Children under 3 cannot enter the samurai session, and this family plan requires at least one participant under 12 in your group.

What is the flow of the experience?

You first change into hakama, then learn katana forms and kata from a Samurai Master, and then deliver full-power strikes on the life-size samurai target dummy. Afterwards you enjoy the guided museum tour, the ninja star throwing competition, and finish with a souvenir photo session wearing soft samurai armor.

What is the samurai striking dummy — and is it safe for kids?

It's a life-size, samurai-shaped target that you strike with a practice sword under a Samurai Master's guidance. Because you hit a fixed target rather than a person, both children and adults can safely swing at full power after learning the correct grip, posture, and forms.

Do I need to book in advance?

We accept walk-in guests, but we highly recommend booking before your trip — especially during peak seasons such as early April and mid-November. If the calendar shows no available times, we are fully booked; our Shinjuku branch may still have openings.

What do I need to bring?

Just your booking confirmation or an ID. Everything else — costumes, swords, and props — is provided at no extra charge.

Can I wear a ninja outfit or my own kimono instead of the samurai hakama?

Yes. You can choose a ninja uniform instead of the samurai outfit at no additional fee. If you arrive from Maikoya Asakusa wearing a kimono, let us know and you may keep wearing it during your time with us.

Can I buy a real katana at the museum?

Yes — we sell authenticated swords at our museum. Talk to our staff during your visit or contact us online using the emails listed at the end of this page.

Do you have a souvenir shop?

Yes. Our shop offers memorabilia and gifts to remind you of your trip to Japan and your time with us.

Are outside food and drinks allowed?

Covered drinks such as bottled water or a thermos are allowed in the building, but please refrain from consuming any food or drink in the exhibition rooms. Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited throughout the entire facility — this protects both our visitors and our valuable exhibits.
