Beauttiful setting, relaxing rotenburo, wonderful hosts
I stayed here for a weekend in November. The hosts were super friendly and accommodating- when I could not arrive until after 8 the day I checked in, they saved the kaiseki meal for me (dinner is at 6:00 or 6:30). The room was beautiful- tatami mats, futon, traditional shower/tub. I also got a room with its own rotenburo outside. The 2 dinners and breakfasts included were incredible- so much Japanese style, flavor, etc. Easy 25-minute ($40) taxi ride from Atami station, itself a simplr 45-min trip from Tokyo station. I do speak Japanese so while I booked this in English on tripadvisor and they have an English website, I used Japanese to call to arrange for the late dinner, to ask about the cab from Atami, and generally to talk to them. I am not sure how hard it is if you don't speak Japanese.

Excellent and sophisticate "Kaiseki" (a traditional Japanese multi-course meal) !!
This ryokan is neither big nor gorgeous but clean and comfortable. All of the staff are very friendly, every time with smile. Especially, the meal is excellent!!! The dinner in "Kaiseki" style is not a good appearance only meal but it's true "Kaiseki", all are heartfully cooked using seasonal food and served in beautiful manners. You can choose an extra room with private open-air bath, however, I can say even if you choose a standard room with no private open-air bath you would be satisfied with their services.

Romantic Onsen
We where treated like VIP from the first moment, we arrived in the resort.. this is not our first Ryokan and our expectations was high, we where not disappointed, room and specially the balcony with the private Onsen, was perfect, maybe it's time to change the tatami mate in the room.. dinner was not in the room, which would have been perfect and more romantic, but we got table in room with 3 other couples, it worked out fine, but less private.. I posted some pic from the dinner and also our breakfast..

A gourmet dining experience in a luxury Ryokan
Ashikari is located Yugawara which is close to a major Shinkansen line between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka. The Japanese/Western style room that we stayed in was extremely spacious with a "jacuzzi" outside. The dinner (and breakfast) was sumptuous and level of detail and effort is quite something. The hot springs were great and even though the Ryokan was largely full was never too busy. Great things was that all those staying at Ashkari were locals so it really made the experience even more memorable. I would recommend.

High End Ryokan
Greeted by staff upon arrival and treated like VIPs through the entire stay. The room was large and spacious enough for 4 people. The location requires a short taxi ride from the station. The kaiseki meal was an experience ... and probably intended more for a gourmand than for someone with an already defined comfort level when it comes to new cuisine. There was fish in every course ... in varying degrees of rawness ... as well as other courses that were served only slightly cooked. That said, the meal was beautiful ... and an experience. The baths on the website led me to believe there would be more choices, but in the end, the selection of baths was somewhat limited.
