Founded in 1801, Kinmata is a traditional Japanese inn located in Central Kyoto. It is near the most well-known food market in the area called the Nishiki-koji market.

In the present day, it is a notable property of Japan and is protected by the government. The building still echoes the vintage aesthetic of Kyoto with its rooms based on Japanese traditional design with complete tatami mat flooring, the table situated in the center of the room, and is accented with sliding doors.

Kinmata has a total of 7 rooms, which cost between 15,000 to 35,000 JPY per night, including a view of the mini landscaped garden of the ryokan. Guests can witness the change of seasons from the comfort of the room they chose to stay in. Outside of the rooms is where guests can take a look around at the lobby and be reminded of Kyoto’s grand days with the facade of the inn.
The cuisine of the ryokan is its specialty where it refers to itself as the “ryori ryokan”, translated as food ryokan. Kinmata highly treasures its kaiseki restaurant, inviting those who are not even guests of the inn to come and dine in their dining room for dinner and lunch.

Guests, however, get to experience exclusive season-based meals. Visitors can also learn cooking from the very own chef of Kinmata by signing up.

The location of the inn near food spots like the Nishiki-koji market, known as the oldest food market in Kyoto. It is also near the Teramachi arcade, which is an old shopping street, and the Gion district, which is known for the geisha village and teahouses.
The inn is accessible by rides coming from the Shijo Station, Kawaramachi Station, and the Gion-Shijo Station. Kinmata has raised awareness ever since COVID-19 and asks travelers to support local restaurants.
