A perfect place to experience the whole Japanese way of relaxing and sleeping.
After a long day on the road and walking the 785 steps to the Kompira-Gu Main Shrine it was a very pleasant experience staying at this Hotel. I utilised the Spa and slept with the supplied on request futon on the floor and was surprisingly comfortable. The evening meal was large and excellent and I was very pleased to have had a "ryokan" styled experience.

Fabulous stay and well located
The staff here are so welcoming, courteous and helpful. The hotel is well situated for the town, kabuki theatre and the shrines. It is a typical Japanese hotel with traditional rooms and full en suite facilities. The picture windows in the room presented a pleasant vista. Yakuta available. Onsen both inside and outside. The outside (ladies) onsen had roses in the water and the gents Onsen had oranges. Umbrellas, sticks, towels and hats are available to borrow. We stayed for 2 nights in room 618 on a breakfast and dinner basis. Dinner is traditional Japanese fare and beautifully presented and excellent quality. There is so much food though and we could never finish it and felt quite guilty at the waste. As others have mentioned English is limited for conversation but is more than adequate for service and requests (and it is Japan so try out a few words!). Smiles always work. Well recommended.

Absolutely loved it
A wonderful nearly authentic experience in a glorious little town. Ideally located at the side of the steps to the shrine and gates and near all the shopping facilities and restaurants. Room was ideal with a magical view out to cherry blossoms and hills. The room was an excellent size complete with 2 low western beds and optional conversion to Japanese style, which I loved. Dinner and breakfast were wonderful - excellent choices for breakfast and perfectly presented 9 course dinner. Fabulous bathroom with large deep bath looking out over trees. Excellent shower room with everything you could wish for provided. Highly recommended and would love to have stayed longer

GOOD LOCATION; WALKING DISTANCE TO ALL SIGHTS + GREAT SERVICE
Here you can have as little or a much of traditional Japan as you like; hot springs for public bathing, kimonos for dinner. Food is the local tradition with local flavor. The staff was very accommodating; if in Kotohira I highly recommend this property to get the full effect.

Great hotel, food, and location
My girlfriend and stayed here for one night before doing the 1368 steps to the Konpira-san shrine. Conveniently located off the 22nd step and next door to the famous Kabuki theater (also worth a visit)! Nice, very attentive service. Upon entering we were seated at a nice table in the entry way, provided a tasty hot matcha tea and small food by servers in kimono, as they checked us in while we relaxed. Very welcoming. Nice gift shop in the lobby with good selection of reasonably priced Japanese treats. Wonderful dinner with amazing food. Multicourse meal, starting with 1/2 dozen small dishes, then with incredible array of specialties, complimentary small citrous wine (other alcohol not free). Entree (option of meat or fish), udon ( choice of 6 types), fish stew, sashimi, tempura, delicious daichi soup, and finished with ice cream from fresh fruit. Almost no English spoken or printed at hotel. Breakfast buffet had quite large selection, including some of the best hamachi, tai and sake sashimi I'd had in Japan; very fresh. Tamago wasn't the best , but sufficient. Had small Western breakfast (yogurt, pancake, french toast, crossaint, rolls, and I think some dry cereals). Room (#513) was slightly small (not by Japan standards!) with two double beds with just about 1 ft between them, tatami mat, small low table. We appreciated having separate toilet from bathing room. Onsen was simple with two temperature indoor pools and two outdoor pools, and steam room. Onsen open ~ 0500-2400, sauna closed at 2200h. Massage was inexpensive, ~65 Y per hour; not amazing but still relaxing.
