Shima Yamaguchikan

Shima Yamaguchikan is a traditional Japanese inn located in Shima Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. It features seven unique hot spring baths, with open-air baths right by the mountain stream.

The property has 79 guest rooms fitted with tatami mat flooring, and shoji screens and equipped with a television, a refrigerator, and an electric kettle. Each room has a sitting area on the tatami with low furniture and a private bathroom with bathtubs and showers. Guests are provided with yukata robes for the duration of their stay. Some rooms will have their own open-air baths. One night’s stay can range from 15,000 to 40,000 JPY.

Shima Yamaguchikan offers three kinds of hot spring baths, moisturizing water that is infused with sulfate, cleansing water or the hydrogen carbonate spring, and the detox or sulfur spring.

There are three communal baths, one themed open-air bath and one next to the mountain stream, while one is an indoor bath. There are four more baths that are reserved for private use on a first-come-first-served basis. They are also wheelchair accessible.
Other facilities on the property include a restaurant “Valley Teahouse” which provides a semi-private dining area, as well as serves multi-course kaiseki meals that feature seasonal local ingredients and Joshu beef. A Japanese breakfast is also provided.

There is also a bookstore, a gift shop that sells kimono accessories, children’s toys, and local sake, a bar, and a noodle shop.

Shima Yamaguchikan can be accessed by taking the JR Limited Express from Ueno Station, Tokyo. The establishment is operating normally with safety measures in place and limited acceptance to prevent the spread of infection.
