Sumiya Ryokan Kyoto

Sumiya Ryokan is located in the heart of Kyoto City. This relaxed and casual accommodation from the early Taisho period features sukiya style interiors and facade--”sukiya” meaning refined and elegant.

As an establishment built to accommodate guests who came to learn about the Japanese art of tea ceremony, Sumiya Ryokan still serves guests matcha green tea in the tea room on scheduled dates.

The ryokan has 23 rooms, with rates ranging from 65,000 to 105,000 JPY, all of which immerses the guests into the world of “wabi-sabi”, an aesthetic that focuses on asymmetry and harmony.

The rooms are fitted with tatami mats, traditional furniture, and windows overlooking the inner courtyard. The guests are served their kaiseki meals in the privacy of their own guest room, with the dishes coming at the pace of each guest.

Sumiya Ryokan can be accessed by car and public transportation. Travelers from JR Kyoto Station may take a 15-minute taxi ride to the ryokan, or take the Karasuma Line from Karasuma Oike Station.

The inn is operating normally with safety measures in place and limited acceptance to prevent the spread of infection
