Wonderful stay
We had a wonderful stay at Ryokan Motonago!!! We privatized the public bath everyday, we had a wonderful japanese diner in our room!! And above all, the service was incredible (very good advice for restaurant in Kyoto)!!!

Another time, another place
Many hotels in Japan are called "ryokan": most of them are modern-style ryokan, but a few only are traditional ones and sometimes, you feel like tasting the special flavour of tradition and history, especially when it is in perfect combination with the location of the ryokan. Motonago is an absolutely traditional ryokan, located in an absolutely traditional place.

Amazing experience!
My partner and I spent a night here at the end of our visit to Kyoto. The food was incredible (we opted for both breakfast and dinner, and so should you!) and we enjoyed the private bath. I'd absolutely recommend this Ryokan to anyone visiting Kyoto.

A nice taste of Japanese culture.
I booked motonago based on trip advisor reviews. We could not have been happier with our choice. The location is perfect. Right in the old style part of kyoto, minutes walk to Gion, maranuma park ( most amazing luminated cherry blossom tree ) and several temples. Dinner/ breakfast were included daily in our room agreement - which seemed to be ' the done thing' during cherry blossom season at many establishments to help boost their income. The food was nicely presented and tasty. On the second evening we had shabu shabu which I would highly recommend - The room was small, but adequate ( with our own private toilet but not bathroom). The communal washrooms were able to be booked to attend as a couple which was a nice touch. The staff were very helpful and respectful . Not all spoke English well, but there was always someone who could help assist our enquiries. The only issue ( which is not exclusive to this ryokan) is that smoking is still allowed inside ! It seems archaic to us - Australia outlawed this many years ago.

Stay at a Ryokan
Great service! Would definitely recommend this ryokan as it is quite centrally located. You can walk to Gion from there. The baths are slightly small compared to the other ryokans I have stayed at. Relatively easy to communicate with the staff. Good is good. We had the Western breakfast and did a dinner there one night. Both were great.
