Kiyomizudera is one of the most popular sightseeing destinations in Kyoto, lined up with many souvenir shops and restaurants on Ninen-zaka and San’nen-zaka.. Over 1200 years ago, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, a renowned warrior came here to hunt for a stag. But he met a training monk at the source of the clear waters and realized it was wrong to kill living animals. Then he became a devout believer of Kan’non Bodhisattva (God of Mercy) and built a Buddhist temple here. This Kan’non Bodhisattva which has eleven heads and thousand arms is the main object of worship, but only open to the public every 33 years.
The temple was burnt down several times, and the present building was reconstructed in 1633 by the 3rd Shogun of the Edo Period. The architecture is made of Japanese cypress and the roof is of cypress bark. 12-meter scaffolding has 139 wooden pillars which are put together by wooden wedges without using any nails. It is an earthquake resistant structure as wedges don’t loosen up easily. There’s a famous saying in Japanese, ’Jumping off from Kiyomizu Stage,’ meaning deciding to do something very important. 235 people have tried to throw themselves from the stage, but there was 85% survival rate.
Jishu Shrine, the shrine for matchmaking is extremely popular among young people. Otowa no Taki, clear water from Mt. Otowa is said to have power of scholarly success, matchmaking and long life.
