Kyoto Ryokan Kinoe

Would have given 4 stars but our last evening caused a lower rating. We were the only room on floor 2, which is the banquet floor. On our last night we came back to a party and lots of smoke. Not what I wanted after a long day of sightseeing. Other than that, the service was fantastic. Clean rooms and nice grounds. UPDATE- The next morning they were SO apologetic. Koji was so nice. He made us feel like royalty.

The Kinoe was a great Japanese traditional ryokan. It has a small public bath, although a lot smaller than I had thought. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Not only do they bring your luggage to your room but every time you come back to the ryokan, they put your shoes away for you and bring them back out when you’re ready to head out. They are very knowledgeable about the area and offer great recommendations for food places and sightseeing spots. I found that the walls were really thin so I heard people in the room next to me talking and heard their alarm in the morning. I was also taken aback that they let people smoke in the small lobby space.

First time in a ryokan. It's been pretty good, worth a try if you haven't stayed in one before. Definitely get the traditional Japanese breakfast, a huge but healthy meal and beautifully presented! There is also a public bath on the ground floor for guests to use. The receptionist who greeted us was nice but showed no emotion at all! I didn't like the fact that they allow smoking in the reception area, not a pleasant smell as you walk in. I'm sure there are much better ryokan out there but you have to pay much more for those. Our two night stay was around $720 AUD.
